This use explains that an action occurred in the past.
- Sentences are written in SIMPLE PAST TENSE.
This use explains that one action (Action # 1 or First action) was happening and it was interrupted by another action (Action # 2 or Second action).
- Action # 1 or First action is in PAST CONTINUOUS
TENSE.
- Action # 2 or Second action is in SIMPLE PAST
TENSE.
- Linking word or connector: "WHEN".
- The order of the sentences doesn't change the intention.
Example:
I was reading a book
WHEN the telephone rang
or
The telephone rang
WHEN I was reading a book
This use explains that two or more actions occurred at the same time in the past.
- Sentences are written in PAST CONTINUOUS TENSE.
- Linking word or connector: "WHILE" or "WHEN".
This use explains that the actions occurred one after another, the actions are in sequence.
- Sentences are written in SIMPLE PAST TENSE.
- Linking word or connector "AND".
This use explains that the actions occurred in a specific moment of the past.
- Sentences are written in PAST CONTINUOUS TENSE.
This use explains that the actions occurred only once, and they won't happen again.
- Sentences are written in SIMPLE PAST
TENSE.
