LESSON 6

PAST SIMPLE and PAST CONTINUOUS TENSE

USES

You will be able to see the different uses of the PAST CONTINUOUS and SIMPLE PAST TENSE. Read them carefully.

1. COMPLETED ACTION IN THE PAST

This use explains that an action occurred in the past.

- Sentences are written in SIMPLE PAST  TENSE.

2. INTERRUPTED ACTION

This use explains that one action (Action # 1 or First action) was happening and it was interrupted by another action (Action # 2 or Second action).

- Action # 1 or First action is in PAST CONTINUOUS TENSE.
- Action # 2 or Second action is in SIMPLE PAST TENSE.

- Linking word or connector:  "WHEN".

- The order of the sentences doesn't change the intention.


Example:


I was reading a book WHEN the telephone rang

or


The telephone rang WHEN I was reading a book


3. SIMULTANEOUS ACTION

This use explains that two or more actions occurred at the same time in the past.

- Sentences are written in PAST CONTINUOUS TENSE.

- Linking word or connector:  "WHILE" or "WHEN".

4. SEQUENCE OF ACTIONS

This use explains that the actions occurred one after another, the actions are in sequence.

- Sentences are written in SIMPLE PAST TENSE.

- Linking word or connector "AND".


5. ACTION IN THE MIDDLE

This use explains that the actions occurred in a specific moment of the past.

- Sentences are written in PAST CONTINUOUS TENSE.


6. ACTIONS WHICH WON'T HAPPEN AGAIN

This use explains that the actions occurred only once, and they won't happen again.

- Sentences are written in SIMPLE PAST TENSE.
